SAGE WAS having one of those days from hell. His secretary had called in sick (which was rare) and the temp that the agency sent over was beyond incompetent. She didn’t know how to make a decent pot of coffee, so he sent her across the street to Starbucks for a double espresso with low-fat milk, but she came back with a cappuccino with heavy cream instead. And every time she tried to transfer a call to his office, she’d disconnect the caller, and if that wasn’t bad enough, she must have been dyslexic because she kept transposing telephone numbers on his messages, so he couldn’t even return calls. He was accustomed to Pearl, who’d been with the company since he was a little boy. Having been his father’s longtime secretary she was the epitome of efficiency. Pearl arrived at the office before he did, and had his daily itinerary typed and on his desk when he got there. The temp didn’t have a clue how to pull up his schedule on the computer, so he had to do her work as well as his, and was getting more frustrated as the day went on. Sage thought about calling the agency to get a replacement, but he didn’t want to chance getting another nincompoop. He made a note for Pearl to change agencies, because clearly this one didn’t screen their applicants properly.
“Uh, excuse me, but there’s a Ms. Walker on the phone,” the temp said, peeking her head through his office door.
“Put her through. On second thought, I’ll answer the call at your desk instead,” he said, remembering that the girl couldn’t transfer calls.
Sage walked out to the secretary’s desk, picked up the phone, and said in his most professional voice, “Sage Hirschfield speaking.”
“My, my, don’t you sound like the Big Kahuna,” Missy teased.
“Good afternoon, Ms. Walker, how may I help you?” he asked, ignoring her comment, knowing the temp was standing right over his shoulder and listening to every word he was saying.
“You can help yourself to some good loving,” she said suggestively.
“Actually, I was thinking along those same lines. How’s six o’clock?”
“Six is perfect. Bring both of your appetites because I’m cooking dinner, and after you eat, you’re going to fuck my brains out. See you later, lover,” she said, and hung up.
It was four-thirty, and Sage decided not to prolong the agony any longer. “There’s no need for you to stay until six. You can leave now,” he said to the temp.
“Leave now? But my agency said this assignment wasn’t over until six o’clock. If I leave now, I won’t get no overtime on my check, and I need the overtime,” she said, looking like she was on the verge of tears.
“Don’t worry, you’ll get paid for a full day. Put your out time as seven o’clock and I’ll sign your timesheet,” Sage said. He was willing to do just about anything to get this girl out of his office.
“Oh, wow! Thanks, Mr. Hirschfield,” she said, smiling from ear to ear.
